Women In The Wind - NJ Renegades Chapter

Andrea

Hello there!
I am Andrea and I got my motorcycle license in the summer of 2010.  I don't know what my real motivation is.  Maybe I was jealous of my son's moped.  Or maybe while growing up, everyone seemed to have a dirt bike in my neighborhood but me and my brother, and I was jealous back then. So, early in the summer of 2010, I was with two friends at breakfast one day.  I thought I had a shocking announcement that I wanted to learn how to ride. It wasn't shocking to them.  One friend said she was riding for years without a license, and another wanted to get a license. I was thrilled to go to the motorcycle safety class with two friends.

My husband, however, is not thrilled with my riding.  Neither are my kids.  I hide my motorcycle at the neighbor's house when the in-laws come over, twice a year now.  Sometimes my kids try to blackmail me, that they will tell their grandparents that mommy rides a motorcycle.  So much for family support. Oh well, life it too short.  I guess I am at the time of my life where it is time to do something for me. Riding is really just for me, a self-indulgence that I find totally fun and exhilarating.

I started riding around in my neighborhood on a slightly-used Suzuki s40 that I bought.  It was a modest, good beginner's bike.  I put on 1000 miles in a few months, and traded up to a brand new 2009 Suzuki C50.  It' s a good thing I have a job, so I can pay for my fun times.  I actually go to work on my motorcycle.  I only work a couple miles from my house.  My first real long ride was with the Renegades, two weeks after I got my license.  I found them online, and just went on a Sunday ride one day.  I laugh, because by the end of that day, I thought nothing of riding down Rt 23 by myself. Before that day, highway driving was intimidating.   This is really a benefit to being part of the Renegades, because they ride all over the place. Oh, and they will correct the newbies, and certainly safety comes first.  It is not intimidating at all to ride with them.  I am getting more and more comfortable on rides now. And they go on nice, long day trips; rides that I would never go on my own.  I could never even find these rides. I had no idea that New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York was so scenic - for miles on end (nod to you, Road Captain Lisa).

I have a lot of time constraints between my job, and my family.  I try to get to the meetings when I can, and it isn't too hard because the meetings aren't even that long, and they are fun too.  I love the rides!  I am so lucky to have found the Renegades, because I love to have fun, and I don't like to ride alone.
